“I spot the ceiling at every spin – its view is somehow reassuring. I am rolling downward.
My peripheral vision catches things I haven’t seen before. I squint to see them clearer, I can’t understand wh.. The ceiling returns in focus – each time a bit further – erasing what was in my field of vision a blink ago. A twist. A different image appears.
Back to the ceiling, then another image.
The same ceiling. A new image.
Again and again. A loop of sights. I am falling through a waterfall of noises.”
With my eyes in free fall is a performance for a user. A visual poem. An associative piece of writing. Could be an earworm too.
Playing with repetition, absurdity and loose connections, With my eyes in free fall is a text in space (here specifically the on-line space of a social media platform). Words trip downward creating a rhythmic sequence, a clear choreography to let the viewer’s imagination free to wander. In free fall/in free scroll.
The exhibition is one of multiple translations of a larger research of the artist on the act of falling, its experiences and meanings.
The deepest thanks to Jessie Bullivant, Michael Mccrea, Roberta Segata and Carloalberto Treccani.
BIO
Laura Cemin (1992) is a Helsinki-based Italian artist active in the fields of visual and performing arts: although her work always originates from a performative action, it can appear in multiple forms, such as live performances, text, photographs and installations with objects.
Cemin’s artistic practice focuses on understanding movement in relation to language, on searching the poetics in everyday gestures, on repetition, humour and absurdity. She is fascinated by the intersections and overlaps between language and movement and by how verbal language, with its metaphors and rhetoric, shapes the way we move and physically interact.
She holds a degree in dance and has received her MFA from Umeå University of Fine Arts in 2019. Her work has been presented internationally in galleries, theatres, and museums, such as Norrlandsoperan (SE), Bildmuseet (SE), and Kiasma (FI).
