Langs kysten litt sør for Stavanger ligger Hå Gamle Prestegard – senter for samtidskunst og kulturarv. Prestegården ble bygget i 1637 og fungerte som dette fram til 1919 da driften ble lagt om til jordbruk. På begynnelsen av 1980-tallet gikk prestetunet gjennom en storstilt restaureringsprosess og gjenåpnet i 1983 som den kunst- og kulturinstitusjonen vi kjenner i dag. Hå Gamle Prestegard består av flere bygninger – våningshus, fjøs, uthus, et nytt anneks og et jærhus. De ulike bygningenes og rommenes særegne egenskaper har blitt godt bevart selv om mindre nødvendige justeringer har blitt gjort for å skape et høyt kvalitativt rammeverk for utstilling av kunst.
Kunstsenteret arrangerer rundt femten utstillinger i året med hovedsakelig norsk og nordisk samtidskunst som fokuserer på maleri, foto, installasjon, skulptur og kunsthåndverk. Omgitt av den dramatiske naturen ved Atlanterhavet og lange rullesteinsstrender, presenterer Hå Gamle Prestegard i tillegg et program bestående av kulturhistoriske utstillinger, utendørs prosjekter, konferanser, konserter, litteratur- og temakvelder.
Skiftende historiske utstillinger baserer seg på lokale og regionale tradisjoner og kultur, og i kjelleren på jærhuset vises rester av en 8000 år gammel bosetting på permanent basis. Anneksbygningen ble oppført i 1980 som et tillegg til den gamle låven og er bygget med tradisjonelle byggeteknikker og materialer. Denne bygningen fungerer som resepsjonsområde, kunstbutikk og bokhandel med et bredt utvalg av bøker om både kunst og lokal historie. En annen verdifull kulturarv i området finnes like ved prestegården; cirka 600 gravplasser som daterer seg tilbake til folkevandringstiden (ca.400 og 800e.Kr.) ligger på rullesteinstranden ut mot havet.
Hå Gamle Prestegard har også ansvar for programmeringen av det tilstøtende fyret Obrestad fyr, som ligger noen få hundre meter fra prestegården. I 2006 kjøpte Hå kommune fyret med en ambisjon om å formidle områdets kulturarv til et bredere publikum. Fyret ble automatisert i 1991, og fyrvokteren og hans familie flyttet ut. De gamle maskinene står fremdeles intakt og deler av bygningen er i dag museum. I tillegg blir kunstnere invitert på en jevnlig basis for å stille ut både inne i fyret og i det omkringliggende landskapet. En tilbakevendende prosjekt de siste årene er ”On the Edge” som på utvalgte fyr langs kysten av Rogaland undersøker historien til stedet i kombinasjon med moderne kunstuttrykk.
Med sin varierte programmering er Hå Gamle Prestegard en møteplass for lokalhistorie og samtidskunst så vel som for mennesker med ulike bakgrunner og interesser. Perched on the edge of the shore on a wind-blown coast just south of Stavanger sits Hå Gamle Prestegard (The Old Vicarage) – a center for contemporary art and cultural heritage.
The vicarage was built in 1637 and functioned as such until 1919, when it began to be used for general farming. In the early 1980’s the valuable farmyard went through a large-scale restoration process and opened in 1983 as the art and cultural institution we know today. The facilities consist of several buildings – a farmhouse, barns, sheds, a new annex and a “jærhus” (a traditional wooden house from the Jæren area). Surrounded by the dramatic scenery of the Atlantic Ocean and long pebble beaches, Hå Gamle Prestegard presents a program consisting of art and historic exhibitions, outdoor projects, conferences, concerts, literature readings and other cultural events.
The art center hosts approximately fifteen exhibitions a year of primarily Norwegian and Nordic contemporary art, with a focus on painting, photography, installation, sculpture and craft work. The distinct characteristics of the various buildings and rooms have been well preserved, although slight necessary adjustments have been made in order to create a high-quality framework for exhibiting art. Alongside the art exhibitions, visitors can see the remains of an 8,000 year-old settlement on permanent view in the basement of Jærhuset, as well as temporary exhibitions based on local and regional traditions and culture. The “Annex” was built in the 1980’s as an addition to the old barn and was created with traditional building techniques and materials. This building serves as the reception area, art supply shop, and bookstore with a wide selection of books on both art and local history. Yet another valuable cultural heritage site can be found along the coast nearby, where approximately 600 graves have been recorded along a 24 mile long stretch of coastline. Most of the burial sites are located directly on the pebble beach out towards the sea and date back to the Migration period (circa 400 to 800 AD).
Hå Gamle Prestegard also oversees the programming of the adjacent lighthouse Obrestad fyr, situated on a promontory a few hundred meters from the vicarage. In 2006, the Hå municipality purchased the lighthouse with the ambition of communicating the area’s cultural heritage to a broader public. The lighthouse was automated in 1991 and the lighthouse keeper and his family who had lived in the adjacent houses moved away. However, the old machinery has been left intact and the history of the lighthouse is conveyed through areas of the building that have been formed into a museum. In addition, artists are invited on a regular basis to exhibit both inside the lighthouse and in the surrounding landscape. A recurring project over the last several years has been On the Edge, a series of exhibitions on selected lighthouses along the coast of Rogaland County. As with Hå Gamle Prestegard, the history of the place is investigated and combined with contemporary artistic expressions.
With its varied programming, Hå Gamle Prestegard can be understood as a meeting place for both local history and contemporary visual art, as well as for people with varied backgrounds and interests. Many visitors also combine their visit with a hike along the beautiful beaches, and for those who want to extend their stay, two of the residential houses next to the lighthouse can offer overnight accommodation.
