Sandnes Kunstforenings ble stiftet i 1955 under navnet Sandnes Byselskap – Kunstforening, på initiativ fra ingeniøren og kunstsamleren Ragnvald Kluge. Han var foreningens første direktør, men døde kort tid etter oppstarten, i 1957. Kluge testamenterte hele samlingen sin til foreningen som etter noen flere navnebytter ble hetende Sandnes Kunstforening fra 1965. Kluges malerisamling markerte starten på Det Faste Galleri som i dag består av en samling på rundt 200 kunstverk, hovedsakelig ervervet gjennom foreningens egne utstillinger.
Samlingens kunstverk er for tiden plassert ut på flere steder i Sandnes, som for eksempel Sandnes Rådhus, kommunale kontorer, sykehjem og andre offentlige bygg. Det jobbes nå med å samle alle verkene på ett sted for å kunne utstille verkene samlet på permanent basis.
Kunstforeningens utstillingslokaler har siden 2009 vært del av Sandnes kunst og kulturhus som ligger i den flotte art deco-bygningen og gamle kinoen i Sandnes sentrum. Sandnes Kunstforening arbeider kontinuerlig med å utvide den faste samlingen og har over de siste årene forbedret den daglige driften og profesjonalisert programmet. De arrangerer jevnlig aktiviteter og utdanningsprogram for barn og ungdom, samt konserter, guidede turer og samarbeidsprosjekter med andre kulturinstitusjoner.
Man blir medlem av foreningen ved å betale en årlig kontingent. Institusjoner og organisasjoner kan være støttemedlemmer, men har ikke stemmerett. Sandnes Kunstforening arrangerer kunstutlodninger.

Sandnes Kunstforening (Sandnes Art Association) was founded under the name Sandnes Byselskap – Kunstforening in 1955 on the initiative of engineer and art collector Ragnvald Kluge, who also served as the association’s first director. When he passed away in 1957 shortly after the founding, his personal art collection was bequeathed to the association and was the beginning of Det Faste Galleri (The Permanent Gallery). The association changed names several times before finally settling on the title Sandnes Kunstforening in 1965.
Today, Sandnes Kunstforening’s permanent collection consists of approximately 200 artworks, mainly acquired from the association’s own exhibitions. The artworks are currently installed at several locations around Sandnes, such as the Town Hall, municipal offices, retirement homes, and other prominent buildings. However, measures are currently being taken to gather all of the works back into one central location for permanent exhibition purposes.
Since 2009 the art association’s exhibition space has been part of Sandnes kunst og kulturhus (Sandnes House of Arts and Culture), located in the wonderful art deco building and old Cinema in the Sandnes city center. Sandnes Kunstforening continually works to develop their permanent collection and over the past years has improved daily operations and professionalized the program. Activities and educational programs for children and adolescents are organized on a regular basis in addition to concerts and guided tours arranged by the kunstforening, and the organization actively collaborates with other cultural institutions on project pertaining to the visual arts.
Members of the association pay a yearly fee, and institutions and organizations have the ability to be supportive members. The association also arranges art lotteries.
