Curating Art in Isolation
With all but the most essential businesses forced to shut their doors, the creative sector has taken a hard hit. Artists, galleries, and institutions have been cut off from their communities, audiences, and sources of income, while at the same time coming forward as a beacon of creativity, meaning, and connection to people living in isolation during the last several months. Concurrently, the internet has emerged as one of the few places that one can still encounter art, and many institutions have been grappling with how to best engage with their audiences in the digital sphere while maintaining artistic and curatorial integrity. CAS spoke with Director Hanne Beate Ueland of Stavanger Kunstmuseum, Curator Kristina Ketola Bore of Kunsthall Stavanger, and Nils-Thomas Økland of Rogaland Kunstsenter about the creative ways that they are working with their programming to accommodate the social distancing restrictions, and the role of the internet as an interface between art and audience.
