Private: Wear a mask when you talk to me is, very frankly, the single best artwork I’ve seen all year. This includes my trips to New York, Berlin, Copenhagen and Oslo. The solo performance by Swiss choreographer and artist Alexandra Bachzetsis took place on the evenings of October 27th and 28th at Stavanger’s own Rimi/Imir Scenekunst. Those audience members lucky enough to attend the event were met with a virtuoso in the subtleties of movement and gesture that reveal the exhaustion of trying to maintain identity in the face of overwhelming various societal norms and expectations. Bachzetsis has performed at venues internationally including Pompidou Centre, Paris, Tate Modern, London, the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, Kunsthalle Basel, and dOCUMENTA (13), and numerous reviews have lauded her success. Instead of rewording that which has already been written, below is a raw, immediate reaction to the artwork, noted in real time as the performance took place, with very little editing after the fact. Rather than focusing solely on the conceptual framework of Bachzetsis’ practice, my hope is to more aptly describe the experience of the performance.
