Summer Greetings!
We at Contemporary Art Stavanger wish all of our readers a wonderful summer holiday! We just returned from our annual summer workshop is Oslo where we ate too many dumplings, visited the opening of the new National Museum, and planned our upcoming fall program. As usual, we will be taking the month of July off to rest and refocus before an exciting autumn season. While weâre away, we encourage you to catch up on recent CAS articles!
Interviewing regional artists is one of our favorite activities. Earlier this year, we spoke with Stavanger-based artist Cory Arcangel about his recent takeover of Times Square, and Katharina Bjelland gave us an inside perspective on her recent solo exhibition in which she asks, âIs this art or can I throw it away?â
We strongly recommend art historian Svitlana Biedarievaâs essay Art Under Attack: Three Decades of Ukrainian Resistance, and Espen Johansenâs historical perspective problematizing public art as gifts. Though different in content, both texts exemplify intersections between art and social-political realities.
In our 2022 research series Fokus: Collections we look at museum collections from a variety of perspectives. Queer Use as Prelude to Dismantling the World by curator and writer Natasha Marie Llorens looks at artworks by Sondra Perry and Liv Bugge as a means of exploring collections from a queer perspective. In a separate interview, Stavanger Kunstmuseum Director Hanne Beate Ueland speaks about the history of the museum's collection, its visions for the future, and its relationship to society as a whole.
This spring, we were finally able to invite guest writers back to Stavanger. Independent critic and KunstÄrbok editor Susanne Christensen traveled to the city and contributed an insightful critique of the exhibition Experiences of Oil at Stavanger Kunstmuseum. Her review is part of our ongoing series on Art and Oil.
So whether you are on a long car trip, sitting by the sea, or eating ice cream in a hammock, bring CAS with you!
Thank you to all of our readers, contributors and supporters â you make what we do possible.
All our best to all of you,
