We at Contemporary Art Stavanger would like to wish all of our readers a wonderful summer holiday!
As always, we encourage you to catch up on recent CAS articles over the summer. Some of our favorite texts so far this year include Claudia La Rocco’s ruminations on craft, Sámi Indigenous scholar Dr. Liisa-Rávná Finbog’s critical reflection on the philosophy of collecting, Marie Midttun Skretting’s interview with choreographer Elle Sofe Sara, and CAS Editor Astrid Helen Windingstad review John K. Raustein’s exhibition at Sølvberget Galleri, published in collaboration with Kunsthåndverk.
We kicked off our 2023 research focus on the relationship between art and AI with a collaborative text by Ingvil Hellstrand and Hege Tapio about care, humanity and vulnerability under new technological regimes. And as part of this initiative, we partnered with the online publication Shift Space to publish a Norwegian version of Paul Chan’s text Sympathy for the Devil in the Machine. To read the original English version, visit Shift Space.
And finally, Senior Curator of Contemporary Art at MUNCH Dr. Tominga O’Donnell offered their personal perspective on Skeivt Kulturår – Norway's "Queer Year of Culture.”
We are also thrilled to announce that CAS has a new Chairman of the Board. We thank previous Chairman Helga Nyman for her years of service, and warmly welcome Merete Jonvik as the new Chairman of the Board. Merete Jonvik is a social anthropologist and sociologist, and a longtime contributor to CAS. She is an associate professor in sociology at the Department of Media and Social Sciences at the University of Stavanger where she teaches topics such as social inequality and material culture. Her research focuses on the sociology of art and culture. Her approach to critically questioning social equality and its relationship with visual culture will assist us in examining our own organization as we move into our 10th year. We look forward to the continuing growth of CAS under her guidance.
Stay tuned for the announcement in August of the 2023 fall residents in Art Writing. Until then, thank you to all of our readers, contributors and supporters – you make what we do possible. Enjoy the summer break and we look forward to seeing you again in the fall!
All our best to all of you,
