We are thrilled to welcome Maike Statz to Stavanger as one of our 2024 CAS Residents in Art Writing. Statz' practice spans architecture, art, writing and curation, and aims to open discussions around the inequalities that exist in space and space-making, offering alternative tools and methods based in feminist and queer spatial methodologies. Below, Statz speaks to CAS Editor Heather Jones about her interest in architecture, her inspirations (feminist sci-fi!), and the importance of critically questioning how and for whom spaces are created.

CAS is excited to introduce writer and researcher Amelia Groom as one of the 2023 CAS Residents in Art Writing. Groom will be joining us in Stavanger this September to focus on her writing practice, and continue her research on tides and seaside settings in relation to artistic practice. Below, Groom speaks with us about her approach to art writing, the relationship between her writing and teaching activities, and her current research projects.

CAS is thrilled to welcome Franco-American curator and writer Natasha Marie Llorens to Stavanger this September as one of our 2023 Residents in Art Writing. Llorens will be visiting Stavanger from Stockholm, where she currently teaches art theory at the Royal Institute of Art and co-directs the Center for Art and the Political Imaginary. Below, Llorens speaks with us about her background, her research and ongoing collaborations with artists in North Africa and the Middle East, and the double-edged sword of language in relation to contemporary art.

Bergen-based artist and writer Samuel Brzeski will be coming to Stavanger in September as the first 2022 CAS Resident in Art Writing. Brzeski's work blurs the boundaries between writing and art, and critiques the structures of language and modern means of information transmission. Below, Brzeski describes his early interest in language, his working process, and the urgency and energy of small presses.

In her work, she expands the boundaries of art writing and pushes forward criticism as its own literary format. Below, La Rocco discusses her background in dance and performance, her past and present influences, and what she means by "feral writing."

This May, Hong-Kong based writer and independent curator Yang Yeung will come to Stavanger as the first 2019 CAS Resident in Art Writing. As the Founder and Artistic Director of the non-profit organization soundpocket, she is deeply engaged in the act of listening, the natural connections between creative practices and across disciplines, and the larger potential societal impacts of art and arts writing. Below, Yeung tells us more about her background and approach to writing, her current research, and her plans for her residency in Stavanger.

We are excited to welcome writer, interdisciplinary artist, and previous CAS contributor Sam Holleran to Stavanger this September as the second 2019 CAS Resident in Art Writing. His writing and research on graphic culture examines the power and politics inherent in the design and use of artifacts in urban spaces, from street furniture to public art to advertisements. Below, Holleran discusses his approach to writing and artistic practice, his interest in under-examined histories, and his plans for his time in Stavanger.

For our third edition of the CAS Residency in Art Writing, we are excited to welcome researcher, curator, writer and philosopher Zofia Cielatkowska to Stavanger this May. Cielatkowska holds a PhD in Humanities, publishes widely and independently curates exhibitions, site specific projects, symposiums and other events. Below, Cielatkowska talks with CAS about how she views the relationship between her different roles in the arts, past research, and what her plans for her residency in Stavanger.

This September, writer and curator Rob Goyanes will come to Stavanger as the second 2018 CAS Resident in Art Writing. Originally hailing from Miami, he approaches art writing and curating from a literary and DIY perspective, and incorporates these methodologies into his current practice. Below, Goyanes tells us more about his unconventional path to art writing and what he hopes to accomplish during his time in Stavanger.

This June, New York-based curator and writer Rachael Rakes will join us in Stavanger as the first of two 2017 CAS Residents in Art Writing. This October we welcome independent curator Julie Niemi to Stavanger as the second 2017 CAS Resident in Art Writing. This month, CAS welcomes Mathias Kryger as the first resident in the 2016 CAS Pilot Residency. This October we welcome New York-based artist and writer Dylan Gauthier as the second resident in the 2016 CAS Pilot Residency. Working between contemporary art, research, architecture and the environment, and collaboration and community activism, Gauthier's work engages deeply, questions the status quo, and offers possible alternative models for living, interacting, and working both in the arts and in the world at large.
