CAS wishes all of our readers a peaceful holiday!
The fall season has been a busy one, full of local activity, international research, and growing collaborations. In the local scene, Curator Sofie B. Ringstad reviewed the project Huset, a temporary installation by seventeen artists in an uninhabited historic residential building in Stavanger. Art historian Arnhild Sunannå met with artist Odd Sama in Jæren to discuss his artistic practice and the creation of a new body of work.
We are proud to have broadened our activities and collaborations over the past year. Earlier this fall, CAS joined forces with Coast Contemporary to jury the inaugural Open Studios Stavanger & Sandnes, a weekend of programming including talks, performances, and the possibility to visit the studios of 82 regional artists. In addition, CAS interviewed the artists and producers behind OSS to discuss the initiative. We partnered with the Bergen Art Book Fair and Galleri Entrée to publish English and Norwegian version of How Artists’ Books Live, a brief overview of publishing as artistic practice in the US and Europe. And most recently, the interdisciplinary magazine Periskop’s children's editorial team joined CAS in Stavanger for a video review of Sol Calero's exhibition Las Seis Ventanas at the Stavanger Art Museum.
This autumn we welcomed Amelia Groom and Natasha Marie Llorens to Stavanger for the 2023 CAS Residency in Art Writing. We continued our international research series on the relationship between artificial intelligence and art. An essay by Abirami Logendran highlights the practices of artists who critically consider the relationship between AI and societal biases, while Claudia La Rocco considers the existential questions surrounding AI and reminds us that "A.I. isn’t the problem: we are."
It has been a good year for CAS. However, we also recognize that 2023 has been a time of global conflict, societal inequality, and economic uncertainty. This makes us reflect upon basic human rights and democratic values. We would like to take this opportunity to amplify voices from our archive including Marie Skretting’s review of Palestinian artist Larissa Sansour's exhibition Heirloom at the Kinokino Art Gallery, Ukranian art historian and curator Svitlana Biedarieva's text Art Under Attack: Three Decades of Ukrainian Resistance, and Sámi Indigenous scholar, duojár and curator Dr. Liisa-Rávná Finbog's critical reflection on the philosophy of collecting. As the year comes to a close, we at CAS are asking ourselves what role artists, writers, and arts organizations play in promoting equality and peace, and creating new supportive structures – questions we will take with us into our work in the new year.
We wish all our writers, collaborators and readers a peaceful holiday, and look forward to continuing our work together in 2024!
All our best to all of you,
