What does it mean to see? Through an in-depth essay and exchange, written and led by artist Ina Hagen, you're invited to take a closer look at the artistic practice of Klepp born, Copenhagen based painter Kenneth Varpe. Discussing the concept of seeing – and seeing again – with colleague and friend Apichaya (Piya) Wanthiang, Hagen and Varpe take a deep dive into the ideas that shaped his work, currently showing at LNM in Oslo.

On the occasion of the 25th anniversary of Scandinavia House in New York, Stavanger-based artist Margrethe Aanestad was invited to create a new sculpture for the exhibition A Time for Everything: 25 Years of Contemporary Art. The resulting work, titled Afterlight – In Wake of Time, is Aanestad’s largest sculpture to date and stands along artworks by other Scandinavian artists such as Torbjørn Rødland, Irene Nordli, Eija-Liisa Ahtila, Cecilia Edefalk, Britta Marakatt-Labba, Jeppe Hein and Jan Groth, among many others. As the art gathering Coast Contemporary set off on its ninth edition to Velferden in Sokndal and Stavanger, CAS editor Sofie B. Ringstad decided to tag along. Focusing on the group’s visit to the Titania mine in Sokndal, she reflects on mining, whiteness and the thematics raised during the event – accompanied by photos by Carlos H. Juica.

CAS is the region's only outlet specifically for visual arts, and as such we are dedicated to representing the local art landscape within a broader national and international context. A public conversation about art criticism that took place as part of this year’s Coast Contemporary and Open Studios Stavanger is an example of these efforts. In a conversation that sparked much engagement with the audience, curators, writers and critics Arnau Horta and Foteini Salvaridi – both part of Coast Contemporary International Visitor’s Program – shared their practices and their perspectives on the state of art criticism.

Maiken Stenes kunst tar ofte utgangspunkt i et personlig og samfunnsmessig forhold til landskapet. Gjennom prosjektet Via Norske Fjell, som har vokst frem over flere år, knytter hun individuell erfaring av naturen til både kunsthistoriske og geologiske sammenhenger. Prosjektet, som blant annet består av en serie totalinstallasjoner, undersøker hvordan særlig historiske forestillinger om landskapet fortsatt preger vårt forhold til naturen i dag: Kritiker Anne Therese Tveita ser nærmere på hennes utstilling i Haugesund.
