In June, Mexican artist Carlos Amorales transformed the interior of Obrestad Lighthouse with thousands of handcrafted black butterflies. The installation, titled Black Cloud, has traveled the world since 2007, responding the specific architecture and conditions of each site. On the occasion of the work’s first presentation in Norway, Amorales described for CAS the deeply personal story behind the project.

CAS is thrilled to welcome Sarah Kazmi to the 2026 CAS Residency in Art Writing. Kazmi is an interdisciplinary artist from Karachi, Pakistan whose artistic practice is rooted in research, writing, visual art, and performance. Kazmi is visiting Stavanger as a part of her ongoing artistic research project Visnings, which takes a critical and intimate look at the wave of emigration from Norway to the United States in the 19th and 20th centuries.

These works are not simply beautiful; they are defiant. Bergen-based critic Carol Stampone traveled to Stavanger for Citra Sasmita’s exhibition Who Stole the Sky, currently on view at Kunsthall Stavanger. Sasmita, who recently received the prestigious Sovereign Asian Art Prize, made Stampone question her consumption of the show, rule-breaking in white cubes, and the nature of Sasmita’s repetitive female figures.

AVGANG / DEPONI har vært Velferden – Sokndal Scene for Samtidskunst sitt tverrfaglige og dialogbaserte program de siste tre årene. For å markere slutten på det omfattende prosjektet har Velferdens grunnleggere Maiken Stene og Hans Edward Hammonds satt sammen en digital publikasjon – med utvalgte bidrag fra prosjektets kunstnere, forskere, bergverksrepresentanter og lokale eksperter.

CAS presenterer her tre av bidragene: Ingrid Hallands tekst om Velferdens historiske posisjonering, undervannsfotograf Erling Svensens dokumentasjon av Jøssingfjordens havbunn, samt Stephanie O'Rourkes om sublime avfallshauger: Alle på sine originalspråk.

Kunstskolen i Stavanger har åpnet årets avgangsutstilling, skråstrek/. 22 unge kunstnere presenterer sine verk, med stort spenn i materialbruk, dimensjoner og uttrykk. CAS sendte fotograf Carlos H. Juica for å sanke inntrykk fra utstillingen: Her akkompagnert med utdrag fra studentenes egen utstillingstekst og et dikt av Charles A. Powell.

I flommen av anmeldelser fra åpningen av Veneziabiennalen 2026 skriver CAS-redaktør Sofie Ringstad et reisebrev fra kunstverdenens knutepunkt: Refleksjoner om pengenes rolle, den potensielt uhyggelige skyggesiden av vagt «art speak» og en eksklusiv forestilling strippet (sic) for humor.
