July 14, 2025 officially marks the 10th anniversary of the establishment of Contemporary Art Stavanger as an independent organization and online magazine offering insights into the art scene in Stavanger and Rogaland. To mark the occasion, current Director Sofie B. Ringstad gathered the original founders of CAS to discuss for the first time the organization’s founding years, looking back with pride and laughter (and a little bit of embarrassment) at the organization’s history.

Artist Mateusz Pitala's exhibition Listen to Your Microbes will open at Fotland mølle in Bryne on June 1. Pitala's creative practice revolves around the material, symbolic, and social power of bread. He works with a range of media—including sourdough microorganisms, sourdough fermentation, bread sculptures, ancient grains, analog photography, and fermentation-based rituals. In advance of the exhibition, Pitala shares with us a method for collaborating with micro-organisms, and reveals their longstanding collaborating with humanity. For the artist, bread is not only sustenance but also a medium of memory, transformation, connection, and healing.

CAS Editor Sofie B. Ringstad recently sat down with the Studio 17 summer residents, Lucie Garrigues and Sinae Lee, to discuss their work. Read on for a conversation about the eeriness of empty Stavanger playgrounds, the importance of residency spaces for emerging artists, and humor as a way to approach serious topics.

Merete Jonvik, førsteamanuensis i sosiologi ved Universitet i Stavanger, har vært deltaker i Anna Ihles kunstprosjekt Samson, som presenteres for offentligheten som skulptur og lydverk i disse dager. I essayistisk form føler Jonvik seg frem og forsøker å sette ord på de mange prosessene som er bakt inn i Ihles omfattende prosjekt – for så å gå systematisk inn i språklige og konseptuelle knagger som Samson henger på.

En diskontinuitet av historie og et dikotomisk forhold til sin motpart: Med utgangspunkt i utstillingen All Eyes On på Rogaland Kunstsenter har May Johannessen skrevet et essay om palestinsk identitet i fortid, nåtid og fremtid, og hvilke kulturelle strategier som preger den. Hvilke mentale forestillinger av et frigjort Palestina kan oppstå i kunsten? Hvordan blir abnormiteten i en okkupert hverdag håndtert uten å normalisere den?

V E K S L E i Linjegodsterminalen i Haugesund etablerer seg som det eneste kunstnerdrevne visningsrommet mellom Stavanger og Bergen. CAS-redaktør Sofie B. Ringstad snakket med duoen bak prosjektet – kunstnerne Kristen Rønnevik og Kamilla Skrinde – om sprik i intensjoner, kunst i distriktene og små håpsøyer som gir grunn til å stå opp om morgenen.

This text investigates physical and conceptual spaces. In a reflection on the exhibition The Plastic Body at Stavanger Art Museum, the Polish artists’ use of hollows and cavities enters a dialogue with our own understanding of identity, feminism and historical context. From Magdalena Abakanowicz’ bent figures to the silhouettes of Ana Mendieta, the text explores how negative spaces function as containers of meaning and how we as onlookers create connections across time, space and concepts.
